Character homes

Christchurch villas and character-home influence.

Villas helped shape many established Christchurch streets. Modern homes do not need to copy them, but they can learn from their proportion, warmth, verandah shelter and street presence.

Formal style

Victorian and Edwardian villa forms were common from the late 1800s into the early 1900s, often with weatherboards, verandahs, bay windows and decorative timber detail.

Modern lesson

The useful lesson is not ornament for its own sake. It is scale, shelter, street rhythm, room proportion and the feeling of welcome.

Build conversation

Amarok can help clients decide where character cues suit a modern new build and where simpler contemporary detailing is stronger.
